After making our way through twisted hallways and stairs of the Bijenkorf department store service area, we reached the rooftop. Two characteristics of this space stood out to me.
Firstly, the striking Rotterdam skyline, surrounding this open space. Nestled among the buildings, the streets down below could hardly be seen.
Secondly, I was not expecting it to be so quiet. Located in the heart of the center, surrounded by shopping streets, heavily trafficked roads and tram lines, it was shocking to find a stillness only 17 meters above the crowded streets.
As the workers of the Bijenkorf lowered the flags in preparation for the upcoming storm, we walked in a circle around the vast space, carefully following the marked path. Despite the lifeless, grey surface we traversed, potential designs were blossoming everywhere.
