Rooftop Sanctuary
Reflection
The process during this project was not very linear. I followed many tangents, research topics, and concepts until I came to my final choice. However, I am still very happy with my results.
The Pattern Language was not as useful as I thought it was going to be. When reading the introduction I was amazed by the concept of the book. However, when applying it to my project I struggled to fit it into my concepts. The patterns often felt stale and fitted to a very certain situation, often delving more into the private realm of homes or the cityscape. For example, the outside room seemed to fit well into my project, except it mostly focused on the importance of having one connected to one's home. I was often impressed by the applicability a book written in the 1970s still had in this modern age. However, the vagueness which allows these patterns still to be applicable today, often made the book seem stale and rather obvious, stating knowledge that seems to be instinct. Yet again, that is the purpose of the patterns of stating the obvious or un-obvious patterns in space.
While I really see the worth in this book, creating an index of spatial features and behaviors, I did not figure out how to best use it for my project. I wasn't the most motivated reading it either, so maybe I didn't use it to its full advantage.
