People try to find places with thier back protected and open space in front of them. They don't face walls but prefer to face an an open view
Garden level: snug corner bench looking out on garden
Terrace or outdoor room: front stoop allows definite enclosure off of public street, but still nice to have a view of the a larger space
Public space: open to great vistas on one end and and the square itself acts as a back from where to look at an even greater expanse.
Make one smaller space, which looks into a larger space. The smaller space forms a natural back for it. Place it and the openings into a larger space so people face the bigger space when seated.
The image at the bottom shows my research into where the best views are. I marked where the tall building were which blocked the view. The vistas were a vital part of my design. On top are my experimentations with different layouts, creating small space which face slightly bigger space, and which then face large open areas. In a camping site this can create nice levels of privacy, community and activity space. I didn't end up using this so much on my camping design, but the bottom floor of my public area provides smaller and larger areas for sitting looking out on each other.
